Central Connecticut is abundant with beautiful wooded hiking trails and walking paths that transform into perfect cross country skiing and snowshoeing trails once we start getting snow throughout the winter. Keep on reading below to learn about some of our favorite spots to cross country ski in and around Canton, CT.

Canton Land Conservation Trust

Another great location for cross country skiing and snowshoeing can be found right on some of the Canton Land Conservation Trust trails. With over 2,000 acres of land throughout the town and a variety of trails to choose from that range in difficulty, length and terrain, there’s something for everyone. Most of the trails in the conservation are perfect for snowshoers of all levels.

For those interested in cross country skiing, the best trails visit are Conklin, Uplands, Sun-Wind-and-Woodlands and Swan. Each of these trails vary in length, difficulty and rewarding views. Keep in mind that none of these trails are groomed specifically for skiing. Before heading out, we recommend downloading trail maps from Avenza. These maps will provide clear information on trails, blazing, topography, length and parking as well as the boundaries for the Land Trust properties and surrounding roads. They also place users on the trail in real time and indicate their current direction.

Farmington River Trail
If you’re an avid cross country skier or snowshoer, you’ll know that some of the best spots to go can only be found right after it snows, when the powder is light, fluffy and untouched. After enough snow, many people will take to the trails along the Farmington River to get some cross country skiing in. These flat, paved trails run along the river, making for a picturesque view for miles. Be sure to check these out quickly as foot traffic will definitely pack down and melt the snow, making for less than ideal conditions.

Winding Trails
If you’re looking for a more formal spot to go cross country skiing or snowshoeing, Winding Trails in Farmington is a great option. Only a 15 minute drive outside of Canton, Winding Trails is an outdoor recreation destination that operates year round and is a perfect spot to go for the day with your family. Its Cross Country Ski trails are track set and groomed daily. You can even rent skis on site! Winding Trails also offers ice skating and sledding as well.
